The Samahang Industriya ng Agrikultura (Sinag) said cheaper imported pork has failed to lower retail prices and has pushed farmgate hog prices to record lows of P90 to P120 per kilogram. The group called for restoring pork import tariffs to 30 percent in-quota and 40 percent out-quota and for a temporary import suspension.
Hog producers report losses of P50 to P90 per kilogram.
Pressure to restore tariffs or suspend imports could cut Philippine pork import demand, which would weigh on hog prices and reduce feed-ingredient demand if producers cut herds further.
