The Army Corps of Engineers has recommended a $951.3 million shallow-draft replacement lock on the Industrial Canal in New Orleans, to be built between Tonti and Johnson streets. The lock would give barges access to the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway east of the Mississippi River.
The proposal is smaller and cheaper than a 1990 plan and needs no private property.
Improved barge access in southeast Louisiana could ease shipping bottlenecks for Gulf grain and feed movements. The project is long-term and has limited near-term price impact.
