The St. Louis Regional Freightway reports that the Big River Coalition is pushing a proposal to deepen the lower Mississippi ship channel from 45 to 50 feet between the Gulf, New Orleans and Baton Rouge. The group met with port representatives on April 5, 2017, and the project is still at the proposal stage.
A deeper channel would allow larger vessels to load grain at Gulf terminals, which could lower per-tonne freight costs over time. The effect on prices is long-term and speculative for now.
