SEBI, India's markets regulator, is moving to allow futures trading in degummed soya oil on all exchanges. The decision follows a growing edible oil deficit and imports of about 4.2 million tonnes of degummed soya oil between November 2015 and October 2016, mainly from Argentina and Brazil.
Futures trading gives Indian importers a way to hedge volatile soy oil prices, which may support import flows over time. The effect on global soybean oil prices is likely modest.
After 196 past neutral policy events, Soybean Oil moved a median +0.1% over 5 sessions (52% higher; middle half -1.6% to +2.0%), and -0.5% over 20.
