India's Food Minister Ram Vilas Paswan said the government is considering reimposing an import duty on wheat to protect farmers. He noted that duty was removed in December after a hailstorm had cut output.
He said the record 2016-17 crop of 96.64 million tonnes and 6.5 million tonnes of stock make a decision likely soon.
A reimposed duty would cut India's wheat imports, reducing demand on the world market and pressuring export prices. Domestic Indian prices would firm relative to world prices.
