Statistics Canada's first seeding intentions report shows farmers plan their largest-ever canola area, at 22.4 million acres, up 10% and above the 21.3 million trade estimate. All-wheat area is pegged at 23.2 million acres, down 0.1%, while farmers plan to plant much less lentils, barley and durum.
ICE November canola futures dipped 0.4% after the release.
Record canola plantings point to heavier future supply and bearish canola meal prices, while reduced barley and wheat area tightens those grain supplies and supports their prices.
