Brazil has imposed a 20% tariff on U.S. ethanol shipments above an annual cap of 600 million liters, effective September 1, 2017, for two years. U.S. ethanol exports to Brazil were 959 million liters in 2016 and exceeded one billion liters in the first half of 2017.
China has also cut its purchases of U.S. ethanol.
Brazil's tariff targets the largest U.S. ethanol market, which could reduce export demand for ethanol and DDGS, pressuring U.S. ethanol plant margins and corn demand from ethanol.
