The European Parliament voted on 24 October to cut the permitted cadmium content in phosphate fertilizers, starting at 60 mg/kg and falling to 20 mg/kg over 16 years. Most EU phosphate imports come from West Africa, where cadmium levels are higher, so producers would need to shift toward Russian supply.
Fertilizers Europe opposed the proposal.
Cadmium removal adds roughly €45 per tonne to triple superphosphate, and the shift to Russian phosphate carries a 4.8% tariff, so European phosphate fertilizer costs are likely to rise.
