December oat futures rose for a sixth straight session on October 3, closing at $2.75/bushel, near the August 9 high of $2.78 3/4. USDA's Small Grains Summary put U.S. oat production at 56.1 million bushels, up 14% from last year but about 15% below September's estimate.
The production shortfall versus USDA's September figure tightens the US oat balance sheet and supports prices for feed buyers. Canadian harvest delays add further upward pressure on oats.
After 52 past bullish report events, OATS moved a median -2.0% over 5 sessions (33% higher; middle half -3.4% to +2.4%), and +0.7% over 20.
