Nuffield scholar Shannen Davies, from York in Western Australia, has released a report urging the Australian oat industry to move from commodity production toward functional, high-value food ingredients. Her research covered oat markets in Canada, the US, Europe, and Brazil.
Australia produces about 1.5 million tonnes of oats a year, with WA producing over half.
Growing demand for oats as a plant-based and health ingredient supports premium prices for oat growers, though this is a long-term structural theme with little immediate effect on feed grain prices.
After 52 past bullish report events, Oats moved a median -2.0% over 5 sessions (33% higher; middle half -3.4% to +2.4%), and +0.7% over 20.
Moves of each commodity's benchmark from the last close before the event. Historical reads pool past events of the same kind; they describe what happened, not what will. Not investment advice.
