USDA's Grain Transportation report for the week ending January 14 shows rail and barge grain shipments at 3.3 million metric tons, down 6% week on week but up 51% year on year. Barge shipments totaled 914,800 tons, up 40% on the week and 76% on the year, while Class 1 railroads originated 27,700 grain carloads.
Strong year-over-year grain shipments point to healthy export and domestic movement, supporting firm basis levels. The weekly rebound in barge volume also tightens river capacity.
