GRDC-funded research has developed oat germplasm with improved resistance to crown rust and identified priority disease traits, including cereal cyst nematode, Septoria, stem rust and red leaf. The work is led through the National Oat Breeding Program at SARDI.
Better disease resistance could raise yield stability and grain quality, supporting a larger oat area over time, though the effect on prices is gradual.
After 16 past disease events, Oats moved a median +2.3% over 5 sessions (69% higher; middle half -2.7% to +4.3%), and -1.1% over 20.
