The USDA Grain Transportation Report says ocean freight rates for bulk grain rose sharply in the second quarter of 2021, with U.S. Gulf to Japan at $65.94 per metric ton, up 26% quarter on quarter. Rates to Europe and from the Pacific Northwest also climbed, driven by reopening demand and stimulus-fueled trade.
Higher ocean freight raises landed costs for U.S. grain and soybean exports, which can narrow FOB export basis and weigh on U.S. feed grain prices relative to competing origins.
