The USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's weekly Grain Transportation Report for November 28, 2024 highlights that MARAD awarded nearly $73 million to three grain-related port projects. Two involve Illinois River barge facilities, including a $39 million loading dock at Hennepin expected to support a soybean crush plant opening in 2026.
The report also notes a $9 million grant to upgrade barge loading at Hardin.
New barge-loading capacity on the Illinois River, including for soybean meal, can ease future bottlenecks and support regional crush and export flows. The effect on prices is gradual and modest, mainly through basis and freight over the medium term.
After 250 past neutral report events, Soybean Meal moved a median -0.1% over 5 sessions (49% higher; middle half -1.6% to +1.7%), and +0.4% over 20.
