Foreign investors cut their long dollar futures positions in Brazil by $7.6 billion over two weeks, to $19.7 billion, the lowest since October 31. The real had appreciated 2.21% year to date even as the dollar gained against it that Friday, closing at R$5.45 per dollar.
Analysts said the trend could reverse as the presidential election approaches.
A stronger real lowers the local cost of dollar-priced imports and can ease pressure on Brazilian feed input costs. Reduced foreign dollar bets point to a firmer currency, which can weigh on Brazilian export competitiveness for soy and corn.
After 213 past bearish macro events, Brazilian Real (BRL per USD) moved a median -0.2% over 5 sessions (46% higher; middle half -1.5% to +0.9%), and +0.2% over 20.
