India's Food Ministry said it amended the export policy for broken rice to secure supply for poultry and animal feed and for ethanol production. Broken rice output is about 50-60 lakh tonnes a year, and exports rose sharply over the past four years.
Diverting broken rice to domestic feed and ethanol removes a cheap feed ingredient from export markets. This tightens global feed supply and supports rice prices.
