Research from the Autonomous University of Baja California, published in the Journal of Animal Science, found that pigs under heat stress grew faster and used feed more efficiently when given 20% extra methionine. The added methionine also appeared to improve intestinal health.
If heat stress raises methionine requirements, feed formulators may add more methionine during hot periods, modestly supporting demand and prices for the amino acid. The finding is a single study and its market effect is small.
