Researchers have developed a method linking trade data, land cover and biodiversity indices to measure the impact of imports on biodiversity in production areas. Applied to German soy imports from Brazil, the study found that 70% are traceable to municipalities with a high fraction of damaged ecosystems.
The analysis covers 2004, 2011 and 2018 trade flows.
Findings of this kind could strengthen the case for stricter EU rules on soy sourcing, adding compliance risk for Brazilian soy meal supply. The study does not itself change current supply or prices.
After 563 past neutral report events, Soybeans moved a median -0.1% over 5 sessions (48% higher; middle half -1.7% to +1.6%), and -0.1% over 20.
Moves of each commodity's benchmark from the last close before the event. Historical reads pool past events of the same kind; they describe what happened, not what will. Not investment advice.
