India's finance minister amended the Customs Tariff Act to create an HS code for geographical indication (GI) recognised rice, introduced in the 2025-26 budget proposals on February 1. The change lets GI-tagged varieties be exported without special notification, even under a general foodgrain ban.
The change makes it easier to ship specialty rice varieties, a small addition to export flexibility with limited effect on bulk rice prices.
