India will implement new customs tariff lines for rice from May 1, classifying exports by processing type and by GI variety, including basmati. The change was created through the Finance Act 2025 passed on March 29.
The tariff reclassification is an administrative change that is unlikely to move rice prices much on its own, though it may support trade in GI and premium varieties.
After 100 past neutral policy events, RICE moved a median +0.0% over 5 sessions (51% higher; middle half -2.6% to +2.3%), and +0.7% over 20.
