A North Dakota State University analysis finds that US fertilizer imports have shifted since the 10% baseline tariff took effect in April. Potash imports from tariffed countries fell 31% between April and September, while nitrogen imports from untariffed countries such as Russia rose 44% year on year.
Tariffs are raising US fertilizer costs and pushing buyers toward higher-priced or less diversified sources, which supports potash and urea prices and adds to crop input costs that feed through to grain and feed margins.
