A record heatwave in France, the EU's largest grain producer, threatens maize and wheat crops, with temperatures near 40C and up to 43C expected in western France. Expana analysts said French maize could fall below 10 million tonnes, the first time since 1990, if no significant rain arrives within 10 days, and soft wheat yields could drop below 7.0 t/ha.
Euronext wheat and maize futures rose about 3% on Monday.
Lower French maize and wheat output would tighten EU feed grain supplies and support corn and wheat prices, with more EU imports likely needed.
After 1,465 past bullish weather events, Corn moved a median +0.2% over 5 sessions (54% higher; middle half -1.4% to +1.9%), and +0.9% over 20.
