The USDA will begin reopening southern ports to Mexican cattle on August 24, starting with Douglas, Arizona, and will prepare to reopen the Santa Teresa and Columbus, New Mexico ports later. Sonora and Chihuahua are rated the lowest-risk Mexican states, and the nearest active case was about 325 miles from Douglas as of July 22.
The reopening depends on the first phase succeeding.
Imports from low-risk states restore feeder supply gradually, which limits how much cattle prices fall while keeping a bearish tilt. Any screwworm detection could reverse the move.
After 87 past bearish trade events, Feeder Cattle moved a median +0.4% over 5 sessions (54% higher; middle half -3.2% to +1.9%), and +1.1% over 20.
After 121 past bearish trade events, Live Cattle moved a median -0.6% over 5 sessions (40% higher; middle half -1.6% to +0.8%), and -0.3% over 20.
