The rand traded near 16.1 per dollar, its lowest since August 18, after Warsh's hawkish remarks and fresh US-Iran strikes lifted oil prices. South Africa's July inflation eased to 4.3%, and petrol and diesel prices are set for sharp hikes from September 2.
A weaker rand raises the local cost of imported fuel and fertilizer, and higher oil feeds through to freight and feed input costs. Rand weakness can also make South African feed imports more expensive in local currency.
