NASA Acres and University of Maryland researchers are developing county-level crop yield forecasts for corn and soybeans across a dozen Midwestern states using satellite and weather data. The model reportedly forecast a 2024 12-state corn yield of 188.82 bu/ac versus USDA's 183.8 bu/ac.
Results are described as encouraging, with forecasts available months before harvest.
Earlier, finer-grained yield estimates could reduce uncertainty about Midwest supply, but the research is still experimental and unlikely to move prices on its own.
After 770 past neutral report events, Corn moved a median +0.2% over 5 sessions (54% higher; middle half -1.1% to +1.6%), and +0.7% over 20.
After 563 past neutral report events, Soybeans moved a median -0.1% over 5 sessions (48% higher; middle half -1.7% to +1.6%), and -0.1% over 20.
