The USDA Grain Transportation Report says barges carry about half of U.S. grain exports, including roughly 60% of exported corn and 50% of exported soybeans. Mississippi River grain traffic has risen sharply over the past six weeks, with barge rates and movements climbing as exports to China out of the Gulf grow.
Strong barge demand tightens river freight capacity and supports barge rates, which raises the delivered cost of corn and soybeans from the Midwest. Export demand from China is also supportive for corn and soybean prices.
