Chinese importers booked at least eight boatloads, about 480,000 tonnes worth $173 million, of Brazilian soybeans this week. The purchases came despite the White House announcement that China would buy up to $50 billion of U.S. farm goods annually.
Brazilian soybeans are capturing Chinese demand that might otherwise go to U.S. supply, keeping South American basis firm and limiting U.S. export gains.
