Australian wheat, barley and sorghum prices rose at least A$10 per tonne in the week to April 4, driven by rain on ripe Downs sorghum that caused shelling and sprouting. Trade sources reported at least three 50,000-tonne sorghum cargoes penciled in to load in Brisbane for China.
Rain damage reduces top-grade sorghum availability and supports prices, while Chinese export demand adds further upward pressure. Quality downgrades may push buyers toward wheat and barley substitutes.
