Numerous barges have run aground on the lower Mississippi, and grain barge freight rates have surged to historic highs as drought drops river levels. Shipping lines have cut barge drafts by a quarter or more and reduced barges per tow by nearly 40%, and some grain sellers are shifting to rail.
Reduced barge capacity and higher freight costs slow US corn, soybean and wheat exports from the Gulf, which weighs on US export values and cash prices while supporting freight and rail alternatives.
