Australia is planting less wheat. USDA FAS forecasts Australia's 2026/27 wheat crop down 11% to 32.0 million tonnes.
Barley is heading the other way. The same forecast puts Australian barley at a record 17.7 million tonnes.
Why the switch?. Nitrogen fertilizer costs are higher, tied to the Middle East conflict. El Niño dryness is a risk too. Both are shifting plantings toward barley.
What it means for buyers. A smaller wheat crop tightens wheat export supply. A bigger barley crop adds barley availability.
