Pork producers at the World Pork Expo in Des Moines warned that foot-and-mouth disease and classical or African swine fever could cause greater losses than the 2015 bird flu outbreak. Iowa alone exports about $1 billion of pork a year, and the industry is lobbying Congress for $150 million a year in preparedness funding.
A major swine disease outbreak that closed US pork exports would cut hog demand and could weaken feed grain prices, though the risk remains hypothetical.
