Rabobank analyst Don Close says drought has been the most disruptive influence on the US beef complex. Early calf placements into feedyards have raised cattle-on-feed numbers and risk bunched fed-cattle marketings this summer.
Drought-driven early placements increase feedlot supplies and could lead to herd liquidation, which would tighten supply later. Near term this points to pressure on cattle prices, with longer-term uncertainty.
