An Ohio State Beef Cattle Letter column explains that feeder cattle prices typically move inversely to corn prices. New-crop corn has risen about $0.70 since early May on late planting and prevented planting concerns.
Crop progress on July 15 showed corn 17% silked and 58% good to excellent, and noncommercial traders remained net long.
Rising corn prices from late planting and crop stress raise feed costs and pressure feeder cattle values. Corn prices are likely to stay firm until August planting data is released.
