China now applies a 26% tariff on in-quota US corn imports and 90% on out-of-quota imports, up from 1% and 65%. The US exported $9.1 billion in corn in 2017, with Mexico and Japan as major customers.
The much higher Chinese tariffs effectively close China to US corn, pushing exports toward other origins and weighing on US corn export demand and prices.
