New research led by Columbia's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory finds climate change is raising soil evaporation and pulling summer storm moisture away from the Midwest Corn Belt. The study forecasts this drying trend will worsen over the next decade.
A long-term decline in summer rainfall and soil moisture in the top corn and soybean region would tighten future supply and support prices over time. The effect is a multi-year outlook rather than a near-term shock.
