The European Parliament committee report, dated 7 October 2020, recommends an EU legal framework based on mandatory due diligence, reporting and penalties for companies placing forest-risk commodities on the market. It also says about 80% of global deforestation stems from agricultural land expansion.
Mandatory due diligence for agricultural commodities could raise import costs and favour certified, traceable supply of soy and palm oil. Price effects remain speculative until legislation is proposed.
