Canada's Parliament passed back-to-work legislation, Bill C-29, ending a week-long strike by longshore workers at the Port of Montreal. The strike had started as a part-time action in April and expanded to a full stoppage.
The bill sets up a mediation-arbitration process to settle the collective agreement dispute.
Bulk grain traffic is protected under the federal Labour Code, so the impact on grain prices is limited, and containerized specialty crop and fertilizer movements are the main beneficiaries of the resolution.
