The EIA and six other NGOs called on EU lawmakers to adopt an ambitious regulation combating deforestation ahead of a Commission proposal on the bloc's external deforestation footprint. The NGOs back mandatory due diligence modelled on the EU Timber Regulation, covering commodities such as beef, soy, palm oil, cocoa and coffee.
A binding EU due-diligence rule on soy, palm oil and cattle-linked products could raise compliance costs and traceability requirements for importers, potentially widening premiums for certified deforestation-free feedstocks. The impact on prices is prospective and depends on the final text.
