Oklahoma State and Texas A&M economists say fertiliser prices reached record highs in spring 2022 and remain well above historical levels despite some fall relief. Natural gas prices have hit levels not seen since 2008, curbing European nitrogen output.
They expect price volatility through the 2023 season, with China's urea export curbs and Russian and Belarusian potash and phosphate supply as key risks.
Elevated nitrogen, phosphate and potash costs tied to natural gas and export restrictions will keep feed grain production costs high into 2023.
