Darling Ingredients CEO Randall Stuewe said the proposed rendering plant beside Butterball's turkey plant in Mount Olive, North Carolina, makes logistical sense because Butterball's materials are currently hauled long distances to existing facilities. The companies said construction could begin in early 2024 if permits and definitive agreements are completed.
Added regional rendering capacity would keep poultry by-product tonnage closer to processing, easing the supply bottleneck for animal fats and meals used in feed. The effect on prices is modest and long-term.
