Tyson's Holcomb, Kansas beef plant was seriously damaged by fire on August 9 and its slaughter operations remain idle for the rest of 2019. The plant could harvest about 6,000 head per day, so the fire removed more than 30,000 head per week of capacity.
Lost packing capacity pushes cattle to other plants and depresses cash prices for Southern Plains feeder and fed cattle, while boxed beef prices rise.
