The US is importing record amounts of beef while exporting less, after ranchers reduced the cattle herd to its lowest level in decades. Higher domestic prices have pushed companies toward cheaper imported beef and discouraged buyers such as China, Japan and Egypt.
A shrinking herd keeps US beef supply tight and prices high, supporting cattle prices while pressuring meat packer margins. Reduced export demand adds to domestic supply tightness.
