Workers at CN and CPKC prepared for a strike vote on 8 April over rest provisions in their collective agreements, which expired at the end of 2023. The two companies own over 75% of Canada's rail network.
Negotiations had not produced a deal.
A possible rail shutdown would disrupt grain shipments to export terminals and could support Canadian and global wheat prices.
