The May WASDE forecasts 2026 US red meat and poultry production lower than 2025, with beef prices expected to stay higher. The forecast assumes Mexican live cattle, horse and bison imports remain suspended indefinitely because of New World screwworm.
Lower beef and feeder supplies from the closed Mexican border point to higher cattle prices, especially in the Southern Plains. Analysts also note that cooperation between the two countries could have reduced the economic harm.
