Live and feeder cattle futures and cash cattle prices set record highs, with the USDA reporting a 10th straight weekly rise in average cash prices. The USDA cattle-on-feed report showed 11.823 million head in large feedlots on Jan.
1, down 107,000 head year over year and below analyst expectations. Placements fell 3.3% in December.
Fewer cattle on feed than expected confirms tight fed supplies, which supports cattle prices and keeps feedlot demand for feed firm.
