A USDA Economic Research Service report found broken rice is an increasing share of global rice trade, rising from 4.6% to 7.6% of rice used for feed and industrial purposes between 1991 and 2021. China's broken rice imports tripled in 2020-22 to 3.5 million tonnes when corn and wheat were expensive.
Broken rice competes with corn and wheat in feed rations when its price is low, so its relative price swings can shift feed grain demand. Indian export policy is a key swing factor for this substitution.
