BNSF sold 28 grain shuttle slots for $30.7 million in its May 29 auction, with winning bids between $859,000 and $1.2 million. Bids were higher than the prior week's auction, and BNSF will hold a third 110-car auction on June 5.
BNSF plans to run 140 grain shuttles in the coming fall harvest, down from an average of about 155 over the past three harvests.
Rising shuttle booking costs and fewer planned shuttles signal tighter rail capacity for grain movement, which can raise freight costs for interior origins. This supports slightly higher delivered feed grain costs in the fall.
