Freezing on the Mississippi has delayed barge movements since early January, with reduced tow sizes on the St. Louis-to-Cairo stretch and ice coupling on the Illinois River. High water and snow and ice on the Ohio River added further delays, and spot barge rates rose.
Slower barge traffic and higher spot freight rates lift transport costs for grain moving to Gulf export, pressuring farm-gate and basis prices.
