Natural gas futures rallied in early trading as Hurricane Delta approached the Gulf of Mexico, with November Nymex futures up 10.9 cents to $2.736/MMBtu. The National Hurricane Center warned of life-threatening storm surge along the northern Gulf Coast, with rainbands reaching southwestern Louisiana and southeastern Texas.
Bespoke Weather Services said there was no clear fundamental catalyst for the move, and LNG export volumes were only modestly lower at just over 6.0 Bcf/d.
The storm threatens Gulf Coast LNG export terminals and gas production, which can shift natural gas demand and prices. Feed buyers track natural gas because it drives fertilizer (nitrogen) and energy costs for grain drying and processing.
After 221 past bullish weather events, Natural Gas moved a median +3.3% over 5 sessions (61% higher; middle half -5.2% to +14.0%), and -0.3% over 20.
