The United States decided this fall to import 300,000 metric tons of lean beef trimmings. Kansas State University economist Glynn Tonzer said the lean imports are blended with domestic trimmings for ground beef, adding value to fed cattle, while competing with cull cows as a source of lean beef and hurting their values.
Imported lean beef can improve the value of fed cattle by supporting the quality and value of blended ground beef, but it substitutes for lean beef from cull cows and weighs on cull-cow prices.
